For the second straight year in a row, a team with a former Rapids player has won the NASL title. Last season, Eddie Ababio's Tampa Bay Rowdies took home the trophy with a win over the Minnesota Stars. This time around, it's the New York Cosmos who stormed through the NASL's Fall season to take home the title with Joseph Nane and Hunter Freeman in tow.
It was an odd season for the NASL, with the Cosmos eventually making it to the Soccer Bowl final despite playing only half of the season. There were no complaints from the old school NASL powerhouse though, as they were able to soundly capture the fall title and earn a berth in the final against the Atlanta Silverbacks, who had won the spring title and the rights to host the match. Marcos Senna scored the game's only goal in the 50th minute. Both Freeman and Nane saw minutes for the champions.
Former future Rapids legend Jimmy Maurer did not start in goal for the Cosmos, but did earn a win over the Silverbacks in a preview of the title match that the two teams played on November 2nd. It's good to see him doing well after having that superb pre-season match for the Rapids that wrote him into Burgundy Wave lore for years to come.
Congratulations to our former Burgundy boys out in New York!
