For the first time in quite a while, the Colorado Rapids will have representation at the US Men's National Team's camp in January. It might not be the player you would expect though -- not one of the youngsters on the squad like Tony Cascio, but Edson Buddle, he of 11 caps and a few appearances in the 2010 World Cup for the USA.
After their 2010 Cup win, the Rapids saw Marvell Wynne, Jeff Larentowicz, Anthony Wallace and Matt Pickens get called up for a friendly against Chile, but not so much as a sniff since then.
Buddle is coming off of a few seasons that hardly garnered much press, with only three goals for the Galaxy in 2012 after a moderately successful stint in the second level of Germany at Ingolstadt 04, where he was able to score nine goals in 31 appearances. It's good to see him getting another shot at the USMNT level over, say, a guy like Robbie Findley, and it's a pretty intriguing roster in general. (Omar Gonzalez and Matt Besler are fine call-ups defensively, considering how mediocre the USA's defense has always seemed to look with the same six guys rotating in and out.)
Over here, we can just be happy to hear the Rapids garnering some press thanks to another National Team appearance. Who knows, maybe this will be what kick-starts Buddle into being good again?
