Training camps have finally opened for the Colorado Rapids -- in fact, they opened the same day as the SuperDraft! There are at least a few new faces to the camps this season, including drafted players like DeShorn Brown and Dillon Powers. Among those faces are six non-roster members trying out. One of them is Ruben Luna.
You know I've said plenty of times before that I would love the Rapids to take a flyer on the young Mexican. He was always a solid player for FC Dallas, but was never able to break his way onto the field and suffered from a couple of problems that often happen with youth but never got ironed out at Dallas. Right now, DeShorn Brown is the most likely candidate to be the back-up for Edson Buddle in the center forward spot, but Luna could add another piece to that puzzle.
Among the other five tryout candidates, former Rapids midfielder (it feels weird to say that, even though it's technically true) Jamie Smith is probably the only one you've heard of. They brought in three goalkeepers as well to earn the third spot that was vacated when Ian Joyce was cut. If I had to tip my hat in any direction, it would probably be toward Joel Helmick, one of Colorado's supplemental draft selections last year.
