Colorado Rapids forward Omar Cummings made a late cameo as Jamaica defeated the United States in a 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier. It was a disappointing evening at Independence Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, for the Stars and Stripes, but the Rapids hitman will be pleased in the late substitute appearance.
Clint Dempsey notched the first goal of the match during the first minute and it appeared that the United States would potentially soar to victory. However, Leeds United midfielder Rodolph Austin scored from a set piece to level the match in the 23rd minute.
Almost midway through the second half, Luton Shelton condemned the USA to defeat as his strong shot took a slight deflection and eluded Tim Howard into the back of the net. Shelton plays his club football in Turkey for Karabükspor.
The United States pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but poor midfield play and a lack of concentration on opposing free kicks were mostly to blame. Also, Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley missed the match due to injuries. Both teams will face each other again on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, for the return leg.
