Rumor: Colorado Rapids Working Out Contract With Diego Calderon

According to several sources, Ecuadorian international center back Diego Calderon is working out a contract with the Rapids and could be on the team by Friday.

Last night, Tim Hinchey let it out that the Rapids were expecting to sign a new defender by the end of the week, and Chris Bianchi has reported that the new player is 26-year old Ecuadorian Diego Calderon.

A center back, Calderon has played well over 200 appearances for Ecuadorian club Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito and has earned five caps for the Ecuador national team during his long spell in his native country.

He's got the pedigree to start right away for the team, which means that the now popular call to move Marvell Wynne to right back could end up being truth next year -- Drew Moor could also potentially move out right, but I think we can all agree that move would make little sense. Check out this starting back four:

Anthony Wallace - Drew Moor - Diego Calderon - Marvell Wynne

That looks like a much better back four than what we were putting out last year, no questions about it. (Less attacking presence in the wing backs for sure, but a lot more defensive mettle.) The signing isn't complete yet of course, but it's expected to be done by Friday.
