With Roster Space Aplenty, Dillon Serna Could Get His Homegrown Contract This Off-Season

Perhaps with the Rapids tossing eight players aside on Friday, it could open up a spot for Dillon Serna.

There are a ton of open spots now on the roster. Like, way too many. I don't even know how they're going to field a full roster next season, they're gonna need to get so many new players into the fold. OK, so that's a lie, but it's still going to be a very busy off-season. One of the now vacant slots in the midfield does have a candidate ready for action though, young Rapids Academy midfielder Dillon Serna.

A lot of fans were hoping that the Rapids would scoop up Serna during the 2012 season, but he's not in any danger of being taken away from the Rapids for a while now. However, the time is perfectly ripe to pick him up now, and not just because it would fill one of those now vacant roster spots. Future Timbers head coach Caleb Porter leaving Akron's superb soccer program may leave some of the players there with a bit less verve for their position than they used to have, which could open the door for some of the academy guys on the team to go to their big league clubs.

Serna has been highly regarded the past few years, and though he is still only barely scraping the age of 18, he could find himself a spot along with Davy Armstrong and Shane O'Neill in the rotation for the Rapids next year. He couldn't do much worse than Joseph Nane, at the very least.
