It wasn't pretty, but Steward Ceus earned his first career shutout in his first ever start in Major League Soccer. Truly, there was no better game to put him in than the game against free-falling Chivas. Stew only needed to make two saves all night and was hardly challenged, though we could still see some of his shortcomings as a young 'keeper.
To say that the clean sheet wasn't the most impressive one in the world would be an understatement. The two saves weren't particularly hard ones, and Ceus clearly still has some issues with his presence in the box, as evidenced by some of those chances that Chivas had on open goals. He's young, though, and getting these minutes are going to be vital to his growth in the future. Can't complain about the confidence boost he probably got from that game as well, especially after getting scored on at the last second against Tampa Bay in his last competitive start.
Stew will have a slightly harder time of it when he starts against the Houston Dynamo this Saturday. Their offense, led by the ever-present Brad Davis, has put up over twice as many goals on the board as Chivas have in 2012. If he can get a clean sheet against the playoff-bound Dynamo, there will be a lot more cause for celebration than shutting out the Goats!
