Colorado Rapids vs. Portland Timbers - Game Preview

Group hug!
Group hug!

(I have continued to have computer problems the last week or so, apologies for the lack of updates and the short preview today.)

The last time these two teams met, it was the Portland Timbers' first ever Major League Soccer match, the Colorado Rapids were coming off the MLS Championship game where they had defeated FC Dallas 2-1, and as such the Portland Timbers just got completely manhandled by the high flying, full strength Rapids.

This isn't quite a case of two teams going in opposite directions after that first match, but the fortunes have shifted a bit between these two clubs. After starting the year 3-0, Colorado got bit by a serious injury bug which slaughtered their starting line-up and has kept them digging for draws for the last few weeks. The draw-bug has gotten so bad in fact that the Rapids have now set the MLS record for most draws in a row! Portland on the other hand still haven't looked all that good on the road but since the opening of JELD-WAN Field, the Timbers have been almost unbeatable at home in front of the Timbers army.

Fortunately, Colorado is getting a lot of players back these days and are starting to get full weeks of rest at a time. Guys like Jamie Smith and Conor Casey are finally back in full health so the formation and group of players are starting to level out. They will still be missing Omar Cummings and likely Marvell Wynne for the game today, so another draw might be in the cards against the Timbers. The Rapids are going to need to give it all they have if they want to get a win out in the tough atmosphere of Portland.
