That first leg was a bit of a strange game for the Columbus Crew. After controlling the first couple of minutes with good passing and all-right defense, the Colorado Rapids came at them and completely steamrolled their game plan. By the 70th minute both of their starting strikers Steven Lenhart and Guillermo Barros Schelotto were off the field due to ineffectiveness against the Colorado back-four as Columbus managed only a couple shots in the first half.
Schelotto is the best player on the Crew's offense by far and will be starting on Saturday, but his strike partner is still up in the air. A poll on ColumbusCrew.com seems to indicate that the man who replaced Schelotto - Andres Mendoza - is the man best suited to the job. Indeed, after Schelotto was replaced by Mendoza in the first leg the Crew's pitiful offense finally got a spark to it, getting a handful of decent chances near the end of the match and in stoppage time.
Columbus lost last year in the first round after losing the first leg to Real Salt Lake 1-0 and giving up a 2-0 lead at home for an RSL comeback, leading to an eventual surge for a title by the Royals. Columbus has to hope that they won't do that again.
