For the first time in far too many years, Colorado and Real Salt Lake will meet each other on the last day of the season with no worries about playoff berths for either team, with only the Rocky Mountain Cup and the pride of the players and the fans on their minds. Both Colorado Rapids fans and Real Salt Lake fans can agree on at least one thing; it should be one hell of a show.
A win tonight for the Rapids certainly isn't vital - they're in the playoffs after all - but it would certainly be a nice cherry on top of what has been an all around successful regular season. A win would not only net them the Rocky Mountain Cup for the first time in a few years - a draw or loss and RSL will retain the cup - but it would also automatically troll them out of the supporters shield, regardless of the result that the LA Galaxy achieve tomorrow. Playoff positioning can also be boosted with a win assuming a few other things go the Rapids' way.
With several players including starting talents Anthony Wallace, Julien Baudet, Matt Pickens and Omar Cummings carrying knocks and listed as "Probable" or worse on the pre-game report, there's a distinct chance that Colorado plays a slew of back-ups to rest for the playoffs, although I sincerely hope for the sake of the fans that Gary Smith doesn't go that route. RSL has several people in the injury report as well - as well as having Fabian Espindola suspended - but coach Kries has already stated that they will be playing this one to win it, as is the RSL style.
These two teams met earlier in the season for an exciting and hard fought - on both sides - 1-1 draw at Rio Tinto stadium.
Let's end the season on a high note, Rapids!
