Keys To The Game

Colorado Rapids vs. New York Red Bulls - Three Keys To The Game

Photo

Conor Casey is out for the season. This is not a good thing for the Colorado Rapids, I don't think I'm ruining any perceptions with that opinion. He was our best goalscorer, our most consistent player and a dominating presence whenever he took the field, not to mention the guy who was far and away our playoff MVP last season leading us to the MLS Cup.

Well, we don't have him now and an incredibly important game against one of the Eastern conferences best today provides the first challenge without Conor. Here's three ways that the Rapids can get three vital points out of this home match.

Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Colorado Rapids - Three Keys to the Game

Pablo Mastroeni missing is a big issue.

I said before that to be a successful month, the Colorado Rapids needed to get 11 out of the 21 possible points in the month. After two games they have two points which means that they need at least three wins to close out the month out of their next five games. That's a tall order indeed - only getting a draw out of that July 4th Houston match really stung - and it makes the Vancouver game today pretty much the first 'must win' game of the season.

Here's three keys to making it happen.

Colorado Rapids vs. Sporting Kansas City - Three Keys To The Game

It's going to be a whirlwind of a month, as the Rapids face their shortest rest between games of the season with only two full days off between games. Sporting Kansas City are a tough cookie to crack at their new home and they've shown that every game that they've played there this season.

It's a tall order to expect the ice cold Rapids to go in there and take away anything from this one, but here's three things that will help the cause.

Colorado Rapids vs. Los Angeles Galaxy - Three Keys to the Game

Photo

Both teams in this match are playing on the backs of some good undefeated streaks. The Los Angeles Galaxy haven't lost in eight straight games while Colorado has set and broken their own team record with nine games undefeated. While Colorado's streak (2-0-7) might be less impressive than the Galaxy's numbers (4-0-4), Colorado won their previous game while the Landon Donovan-less Galaxy have drawn their last two in frustrating fashion. A 0-0 match against DC at home provided a lack of offensive fire-power while they allowed Toronto FC - possibly the worst team in the league - to take away two leads en route to a 2-2 draw, also at home.

Long story short, Los Angeles will be out for blood, Donovan-less they may be. Here's three things that can help the Rapids keep themselves on the unbeaten run and perhaps even beat LA at home, something they failed to do last year as they lost 1-0 in one of only two losses at home they would endure.

Colorado Rapids vs. New York Red Bulls - Thr... uh, Two Keys to the Game

Colorado has become pretty good at drawing teams in the last few games, if you hadn't noticed. Today's match against the powerful New York Red Bulls is probably the first game in a long time that we can say that not only would a draw be an acceptable result, but probably a preferable one. Red Bull Arena is a hard place to play with the always large crowds that they draw.

Perhaps only looking for a draw is a sad sight for this team, but here's... uh, some keys that will earn them at least a point on the road.

Colorado Rapids vs. Toronto FC - Three Keys to the Game

Finally, a home match! And finally, a home match featuring something closely resembling our top choice first team! Toronto is never an easy draw but right now they're in a particularly brutal stretch of games and are playing for most likely the only cup they'll see this year against Vancouver on Wednesday, with the Rapids match sandwiched right in between the two legs.

Here's three keys to the Rapids winning this one and getting a vital 3 home points. Today's is kind of a short one as I wrote it while in a bit of a rush, but the keys are laid out regardless!

Colorado Rapids vs. DC United - Three Keys to the Game

Photo

This is the first repeat match of the year, as Colorado and DC United have already faced off this season back in April. Back then, Colorado beat DC 4-1 but didn't look quite as dominant as the scoreboard would indicate. With Colorado trying for only their second win at RFK stadium since 1999, here's three ways that the Rapids can pull out some points on the road, be it just another draw similar to the Revolution game or even a rare win.

Colorado Rapids vs. New England Revolution - Three Keys To The Game

Photo

For the first time in what seems like forever, my three keys to the Houston game actually wound up coming into play. I said they needed to improve communication and they did just that with crisp and possessive football all game long. I said they needed to get some goals on set-pieces... and they scored off a long free kick and surprisingly off a long throw-in as well. While that's not really a set-piece, it's close enough for me! Omar Cummings got injured, or he might have... well anyway, it's a new game and I'm going to try to go two for three again on these.

Here's three keys to beating the New England Revolution at their home stadium.
