Dick's Sporting Goods Park will be the place to be on Independence Day as the Colorado Rapids will do battle with the Columbus Crew in Commerce City. Traditionally, the Rapids have performed well on the 4th of July while the club has always hosted a home match on Independence Day since MLS started in 1996. They have, however, struggled a bit more than usual in their last several 4th of July affairs, going 1-1-2 in their last four. After a 0-1-2 clip between 2010 and 2012, they did manage to take down the New York Red Bulls to get back on winning terms last season.
Colorado (7-5-4) are coming off an impressive 2-0 win at home over the Vancouver Whitecaps on the weekend. The 2014 FIFA World Cup allowed MLS to take a break for two weeks, and the Rapids had a strong performance to move themselves into a tie for 2nd place in the Western Conference. Dillon Powers and Vicente Sanchez both found the scoresheet.
Columbus (4-5-7) are coming off a 0-0 draw against DC United at Crew Stadium on Sunday after the original game time on Saturday was postponed due to severe weather. There were also reports of a Crew fan that was struck by lightning outside the stadium. Columbus has won once in their past 13 games.
The Colorado Rapids hosts one of the state's biggest fireworks shows on the 4th of July. Rapids fans will be hoping that fireworks will be going off during the game as the Rapids will took to gain ground on Western Conference leaders Seattle Sounders. Midfielder Jose Mari is currently recovering from an ankle injury and will not be available for selection during the month of July.
