The Colorado Rapids returned to MLS action on Saturday night and delivered a professional and complete performance with a 2-0 victory over the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps. Led by goals from Dillon Powers and Vicente Sanchez, the Rapids started the match on the front foot and never let up. The victory brought the Rapids to 7-5-4 on the season for 25 points and has them sitting second in the MLS Western Conference Table.
Here is how I saw the match:
Clint Irwin 7.5
Irwin did not have much to do, but the one save he had on the night was pure class to keep the clean sheet.
Marvell Wynne 7.5
Wynne was solid on the night and made multiple threatening runs into the box. His cross to Powers in the first half help set up the game winning goal.
Shane O'Neill 7.5
O'Neill looked good partnered with Moor in the middle and was able to shut down the Vancouver attack. He did well pushing the ball forward
Drew Moor 7.5
Captain Colorado did well directing traffic forward and shut down the Vancouver strikers. The Whitecaps never really threatened and it had a lot to do with Moor.
Chris Klute 7.5
Klute made his return to the starting lineup after missing the two US Open Cup matches and put in a quality shift. He looked good going forward and shut things down on the left side
Vicente Sanchez 8
His footwork, his pace, his skill--they all are wonderful and make the Rapids something to behold. He picked up another goal to bring him to six on the year and he, along with Powers, make this team special when they are all clicking.
Nick LaBrocca 5.5
LaBrocca struggled with his touch and had several terrible crosses throughout the match. His passing was fair, but every time he took a shot it went yards over the goal. And he picked up a stupid yellow card late in the match. Just an off night for LaBrocca.
Dillon Powers 8
What can you say about Powers that has not already been said? He is the MVP on this team and when he is on the pitch and healthy, I am not sure there is a team that can beat the Rapids.
Jared Watts 6.5
The rookie was called into duty for an injured Jose Mari and did well clogging the Vancouver attacking lanes and helped to create space for the Rapids attack.
Another solid performance from Hill. Nothing too flashy or exciting, but he was able to push forward in attack and track back to help the back for on defense.
Although Brown did not score in the match, he was dangerous moving forward and his pace caused the penalty kick in the first half. He speed is such a factor, that most teams simply can't deal with it.
Marlon Hairston 5.5
A largely forgettable performance for Hairston who did manage to catch the ire of Irwin late in the game.
Edson Buddle N/A
Late game cameo for Buddle as he continues to look for his 100th MLS goal.
