A Painful Evolution: Four Observations from Mastroeni's Postgame Interview

You can’t evolve until you hurt enough. At that moment, you need to take the necessary steps to know why you’re hurting. So, it’s starts with me and it goes all the way down to the team. We’ll take the lesson and move forward.

This is a choice statement by Mastroeni. I did not sense that this quote came as something orchestrated–something that he was waiting to use for such a time as this. This organically arose from (again, what I sense) years and years of being a leader and studying leaders–even though this is his rookie year coaching.

In listening to this interview, how do we know what the ‘hurt’ is? I know we as fans hurt when Chivas owned us and exposed us. (See? I said ‘us,’ not the Rapids. This is one more example of how identified we become with the players, even though we did not contribute to the game much outside of our fandom.) Some leadership lessons arise from this clip.
