The Colorado Rapids travelled to Buck Shaw Stadium to take on the San Jose Earthquakes and left with a valuable road point in a feisty 1-1 draw. A strong defensive effort and a timely goal by our Man of the Match continued the Rapids solid play on the road. Here is how I saw it:
Clint Irwin 6
He was aggressive in the back and made a number of timely saves and was able to make the punches to clear his area out. He could have done better on the goal as his positioning and footwork appeared to be off.
Klute had a good game and did not appear to be intimidated with San Jose using so many forwards. Held his own against experience attackers and was involved in the offensive pushes when needed.
Shane O’Neill 6
He had a first half shot on goal that was easily saved, but could have been more dangerous with more power. The ejection was questionable, but as a young player these things will happen. Overall good game, the ejection notwithstanding.
Drew was as Drew always is. Solid, consistent, and a leader on the field. Helped keep San Jose off the board for the bulk of the game and did not let the flopping from the home team throw off his game.
In his first game back since the Quad injury, Wynne played well working the back and using his speed to get up front. San Jose tried to steer clear of working the ball on his side which is always a tribute to his speed and skill
Another player returning from injury, the Captain had a decent game. He re-assumed the field general role and was able to distribute the ball upfield in a consistent manner. If only we could do more with it.....
Nathan Sturgis 9 MOTM
In one of the funnier tweets from last night, someone compared his goal tally for 2013 to the person he was traded for. Needless to say, Nathan is in the lead. He had another MOTM performance (last week at Columbus) and paired quite well with Pablo. A solid goal in the first half and rattled the woodwork with a great header in the second. He seems quite comfortable out there.
Sloppy passing, rough touches on the ball, and that chance on goal in the first half. It was a bad game for Harris and the sitter he had late in the first half was indicative of this. If he fires that thing appropriately, it is a 2-0 game. Not saying the Rapids win, but a second goal, late in the first half....
It is really great to see him out there. He had the assist on the goal with a corner kick and was good in distributing the ball and helping control midfield play.
He seemed lost most of the game and never really seemed to get involved in the flow and play of the game. His passing was a little off, and seemed to struggle in the 4-2-3-1 formation.
Deshorn Brown 7
Caused problems for the San Jose defense all game with his speed, but had the tendency to shoot right at the San Jose keeper. He had a good game, but he needs to get a bit better with shot placement.
Brought on in the 73rd for Mwanga and was seemed to settle down his side of the field. Did not do much to stand out, but helped ensure the Rapids left with a point.
Came on in the 80th for Pablo and made a few good runs and was able to earn himself a caution for a questionable foul.
Brenton Griffiths NA
A late game substitute making his MLS debut did not do much, but was nice to see him get his first minutes of the year.
