OK, so this isn't actually Maurer, but there weren't any pictures of him. Damn you Getty! - Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports
Jimmy Maurer has been released despite clearly being a future club legend.
The saddest news of the off-season was not hearing the Jaime Castrillon was getting knocked out with a knee injury, nor was it Martin Rivero's foot injury or the trade of fan favorite players like Omar Cummings and Jeff Larentowicz. No, the saddest moment of the off-season came earlier today, when the Rapids' new piece on Marcos Pirchio closed off with the following:
Trialist goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer was been released, leaving trialist Clint Irwin as the only other 'keeper in camp behind Matt Pickens and Stew Ceus...
Maurer, of course, wowed us with one of the best pre-season games I've ever seen a trialist play for the Rapids, making a string of fantastic saves during Colorado's 3-1 loss to the Portland Timbers at the Desert Friendlies. It was probably the most fun story of the pre-season, short as it lasted.
I assume that he wasn't included on the final team because of bad practices compared to Clint Irwin, but damn if that one appearance he had wasn't enough to convince me! (This is probably why I'm not a member of the Rapids staff.)
I'll let @mtrenhaile close this off:
