The fine people at TopDrawerSoccer have released another 2013 MLS Mock Draft, and this time they have Colorado going in a slightly different direction than they did last time around. This time the Rapids are taking a defensive midfielder, Mikey Lopez out of the North Carolina Tarheels:
Get Lopez in the right situation and he’ll flourish. This is what would happen if he ends up with Oscar Pareja and the Rapids, as the holding midfielder still needs time to transition to the next level but is likely to develop into a top-level player under Pareja in Colorado.
Not sure I agree with this one. Not only is Colorado's midfield already loaded, but at the 'holding midfielder' position they're probably deeper than anywhere else on the pitch. With Jeff Larentowicz looking less likely to be traded as time goes along, they are five deep at that position with Pablo Mastroeni, Hendry Thomas and Nathan Sturgis. Shane O'Neill provides very young depth at the position as well.
From what we've heard, them picking a defender may be more likely come draft day.
Jose Gomez, who TDS had going to Colorado in their last mock, ends up going to Chivas USA at No. 2 overall this time around.
