Dillon Serna Signs HomeGrown Player Contract and the Rapids Pretty Much Win at the SuperDraft

Colorado Rapids

The Rapids cap off their draft (or do they?) by announcing officially that their most anticipated Academy product, Dillon Serna, has signed a Homegrown Player contract.

The Rapids have certainly had a busy couple of days.

In a highly anticipated move that should have surprised no one, the Rapids signed their third and most talked-about Academy product, Brighton's own Dillon Serna. Serna has been called out numerous times by Caleb Porter, who recruited him to the University of Akron, and the staff of US Soccer, where he has been a feature on both the U-17's, U-18's, and now the U-20's with fellow Rapids Academy product, Boulder's Shane O'Neill.

Serna can either make his way into a crowded midfield spot, where he will be fighting with Martin Rivero for a spot at being the attacking playmaker (where he sees himself) or as a Full Back, which is where the Rapids have deployed him most often in training. Akron deployed him in a variety of positions, but most often as an attacking playmaker.

Here's a quote from Brian Crookham taken from the Rapids' own press release:

"Dillon was under-the-radar when he first joined the Rapids Academy, but he took full advantage of the chance and immediately impressed coaches across the country," said Rapids Academy Director Brian Crookham. "He has continued his high level of play ever since, and ended up being our most accomplished youth player to date. We’re all excited to see his development moving forward."

Now that ain't nothing to sneeze at.

With this final piece in place, the Rapids have pretty much won the Superdraft. Both MLSsoccer.com's Matt Doyle and WVHooligan have them ranked their picks particularly high, and with this signing of Serna, it should be absolutely no contest.

No one did better this year in the SuperDraft than Colorado (even though Serna wasn't technically a part of it), which is probably the first time that anyone around here can say that with anyone else in the world backing that up.
