On Tuesday, June 5th, the Colorado Rapids will travel to Livestrong Sporting Park to take on Sporting Kansas City in the Fourth Round of the US Open Cup. The winner of the match will earn the right to host either Dayton or Michigan in the US Open Cup Quarterfinals.
The Rapids impressed against lower-tier opposition last week as they defeated the Tampa Bay Rowdies 3-1. Sporting Kansas City defeated Orlando City at home on a day that saw half of the MLS clubs crash out of the competition. The most surprising result included amateur side Cal FC's defeat of Portland Timbers at Jeld-Wen Field. The Timbers also played many regulars, including designated player Kris Boyd.
In Colorado's previous league match against Sporting, the Rapids overcame two early goals to earn a 2-2 draw on May 19th at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Since league play is at a break due to FIFA World Cup qualifiers within the CONCACAF region, both clubs will likely feature several starters. However, Colorado will be without the services of injured duo Conor Casey and Omar Cummings. Brian Mullan is also unlikely to feature.
However, a victory in Kansas will feature a favorable quarterfinal draw against either Dayton Dutch Lions of the USL Pro or the PDL Michigan Bucks on June 26th. The Rapids might not to look that far ahead, but a place in the US Open Semifinals could be just around the corner should Colorado take care of business against Sporting Kansas City.
