Caleb Folan and the Colorado Rapids mutually part ways
Well, that was anti-climactic.
After a night of rumors swirling about forward Caleb Folan being transferred to Greek side Panionios Athens, it all ended with much less fanfare than expected. The Colorado Rapids officially announced on Friday that instead of a transfer, the club has mutually parted ways with Caleb and he will no longer be a part of the team after one season of service in Colorado.
A Gary Smith favorite, Folan looked lost at times under the system of play last season and got a reputation, perhaps undeserved, of being lazy and reluctant on the ball. He did score six goals for the team last season, the second most of anyone on the squad, but amidst a solidly mediocre season all told.
This opens the door for a new striker signing for the Rapids, though nothing has been announced in that regard. The team still has two very capable target forwards in Conor Casey and Macoumba Kandji.

Caleb gone
I’m not surprised he’s gone, but couldn’t we have gotten something for him? I don’t know the transfer rules in the MLS that well, but why couldn’t we got a few bucks pawning him off on some other MLS team? Was he out of contract?
I kinda had high hopes for Folan, especially since he got off to such a great start. However, other than being a huge, powerful guy, he’s doesn’t bring that much to the table. I’m guessing Pareja has no use for a static, target forward in his system. I think a healthy Kandji, with more touches and more confidence will add a lot more to the attack than Folan, or Casey for that matter.
I wish him well, but I’m not sorry to see him go.
They would probably have gotten money for him had the Grecian transfer actually gone through, but I don’t think anyone in MLS would have wanted him after such an unproductive year for a 200K contract.

If the Greek deal went through...
The Rapids could have made some money off of him if the Greek deal went through, but it wasn’t going to happen. Rather than have Folan bounce around the MLS, the Rapids just released him from his contract. A very nice thing to do, I think, as it will make more clubs likely to take Folan as a free-agent.
That’s business done well, even though I would have also liked Caleb to stay. He was a great locker-room presence as well as a player with a lot of potential once he found his feet in MLS.
