Before the 2012 season began, I counted down the Top 10 keys to a successful season. Obviously, the season was anything but successful, so looking back at them is probably not going to be that much fun. Here's No. 8, Home Form.
To call the form of the 2012 Colorado Rapids 'good' no matter where they were playing would be a mistake, and they certainly didn't live up to the hype that 2010 provided in terms of making Dick's Sporting Goods Park a fortress.
The Rapids did do better at home than they did on the road, putting together a +10 goal differential as opposed to their dismal -16 differential away from DSGP. That doesn't change the fact that some of the most heartbreaking losses came in front of the home fans. The 2-1 loss to LA early in the year that featured Omar Cummings failing miserably at a penalty kick and the 2-1 blown leads against FC Dallas and the San Jose Earthquakes come to mind immediately.
Next season, the form in general is going to need to improve, of course. The Rapids are a team that has always struggled on the road though, so the road to the playoffs will likely run 5280 above sea level once again if they want to get to the big show in 2013. Or at least cut down on those 2-1 games.
