Around SBN: New York Giants Super Bowl XLVI Ring Unveiled

New to this blog and the game (regularly)

Alright, so I am a diehard Nuggets fan, moderate Broncos fan, moderate Rockies fan and recently decided to give soccer/footy a shot. I was talking with a buddy of mine who is a HUGE Liverpool fan this morning and he convinced me to get into the game. I found that he is 10 times more passionate about the sport than most American sports fans, so it sounded like a lot of fun.  So, here are my thoughts:

Star-divide

I know that the Rapids won the MLS cup last year, I live in Colorado, love every other team here (except the Avs...hockey doesn't do it for me), so I'll jump on the Rapids bandwagon.  Sort of a no brainer here.  I'd love to get an idiots guide to the Rapids here.  Who should I watch for? What style of play should I expect? Can we repeat this year? When does Tony Meola get in the game (for that matter, Cobi Jones)?

Secondly, I'm thinking of following a Champions league team. My buddy suggested Aresenal (the Nuggets-Kroenke connection). He proceeded to tell me some things about the beautiful style of play, fiscally smart, coaching style, how the suck on D, how they need an enforcer, etc.  Is this wise? Anyone here have any other suggestions?

I love watching the world cup and Olympics, so I get the sport fairly well. I would just love to hear your thoughts.

Go Rapids!

Another genius post from a Burgundy Wave reader! Naturally, this post in no way represents the ideas of the Editors of BW, just the person who posted this.

Hi there REAP! Good to see more Rapids fans jumping into the fray.

I’d love to get an idiots guide to the Rapids here. Who should I watch for? What style of play should I expect? Can we repeat this year?

The biggest catalysts on the offense of this team are the strikers up top in our 4-4-2 formation, Omar Cummings and Conor Casey. Omar is one of the fastest strikers in the league and is wonderful at making slanted runs into the box, getting the ball and unleashing well aimed shots, while Conor is the quintisential big guy in the box, getting tall and making plays with his head. Conor won’t be playing today but Caleb Folan will, he’s pretty much the same player with slightly less ability.
Our style of play is very defensive and based on the counter, with two holding midfielders in the center disrupting play and making passes to the wingers, who try and get quick plays to the strikers in the box. The question of whether we can repeat this year is still open for discussion, but the team certainly has the talent to do so.

When does Tony Meola get in the game (for that matter, Cobi Jones)?

Laughed harder than I should have.

As for the Arsenal bit, you could certainly do worse. They’re a good team for Rapids fans to follow, personally I’ve always been a fan of Championship side Crystal Palace, but that’s because I’m an idiot.

Isn't Conor Casey

from Colorado Springs? I swear I’ve heard of him elsewhere.

Thanks for the heads up and quick run down. I’m excited to watch some soccer and cheer for another local team!

Following a Champions League team

Barça (FC Barcelona) all the way! It’s my favorite team and they play the best football (dynamic, loads of passes, they always have the best ball possession percentage). Every game is an amazing display of quality through players that (most) grew up in the team. They’re down to earth, half of them are on the Spanish Selección that just won the World Cup and they have the world’s best player right now: Lionel Messi (although I’m a bigger Xavi Hernández fan myself). What’s great about this is that you can still support Arsenal (as they are from different leagues), although you’ll be at war with yourself when the Champions League starts every year. I’m a Liverpool fan too, because they live football in an entirely different way.
Just please, don’t turn to Real Madrid (lol, Barça’s rival and a very dirty bunch. I blame Mourinho), they’re too many and they are who they are because of the ridiculous amounts of money they have.

Shitty teams

Shitty teams don’t make it into the Champions League.
I’m from Spain, so I’ll support Spanish teams, which tend to be quite good (brush imaginary lint off my shoulder…). Been here since august and I support the local team wherever I am (Rapids in this case). I live and breathe football since I was little, supporting Celta de Vigo (second league team in Spain and city where I’ve lived almost my whole life), Barça (Barcelona is where half of my family came from) and Valencia (where I was born). Celta being my first team, I couldn’t mention them as they don’t play in the Champions League (they did once, when they were on the first league).
As I don’t know you, I won’t judge whether you are, in fact, a “real man” or not. Thanks for your input. (:
