In what has been a surprising SuperDraft so far, a lot of talent that people were sure would be gone within the first ten picks fell down to the Colorado Rapids. Gary Smith had said beforehand that they were considering trading the 18th overall pick if they couldn't get a great player with it, but a lot of it fell down.

The Rapids wound up choosing Eddie Ababio from the University of North Carolina with their pick, a USA/Ghana attacking fullback. With LB/RB depth a big need for Colorado, Ababio is a safe if not spectacular pick. Generation Adidas player Michael Tetteh was still on the board, so the pick of an attacking fullback like Ababio is a bit of a surprise. Gary Smith knows what he likes and he obviously saw something in Eddie, who was being mock drafted to most teams in the very early second round.
